What is Laser Skin Resurfacing?
Skin resurfacing with a laser at Serenity Medical Aesthetics is a nonsurgical cosmetic procedure that utilizes pulsating beams of light to remove damaged skin layers. The procedure is performed to address facial lines and wrinkles and to diminish skin flaws, including pigmentation, acne scars, and other issues. Also referred to as a laser peel, fractional skin resurfacing is an effective treatment for patients who want softer, clearer, younger-looking skin. Based on the skin type's needs, the treatment can be customized for best results. There is little recovery time needed for most laser skin resurfacing treatments. During the initial consultation, any questions or concerns may be discussed with the team at our Canton, OH practice.
How Does Laser Skin Resurfacing Work?
If you have a deeper or more intense skin resurfacing session, you may be asked to use a retinoid cream for 2 – 3 weeks before your laser treatment. The retinoid helps prepare the skin for maximum results. Medication will be given prior to the procedure to help lessen discomfort so you can relax during your session. If your skin only needs mild improvement, a local anesthetic will be applied to numb certain areas of the face. For the whole face or deeper laser treatments, some kind of sedation may be necessary. During the procedure, you will relax in our special treatment chair while the Harmony® XL PRO laser handpiece glides over your skin, directly targeting the specific areas for resurfacing. You will feel warmth from the laser, followed by cold air from the built-in cooling system. The laser works to remove dead and damaged skin cells while also stimulating natural collagen production.
What Should I Expect after Laser Skin Resurfacing?
For less aggressive resurfacing treatments, a healing ointment will be applied to the treated skin, and you can go home to recover. The skin will look pink, and there may be some irritation and swelling. These symptoms subside in a few days, and the peeling process will occur over a 3 – 5-day timeframe. If you get a deeper laser treatment, your recovery time will take longer. The treatment areas will most likely be covered by dressings, and the irritation, swelling, and burning symptoms will be intensified. Medication can be prescribed to minimize these symptoms. The recovery period for a more intense laser skin resurfacing session can last several weeks. All patients should reduce their UV exposure after laser treatment and use sun protection throughout the day. Regardless of the intensity, the treated skin will naturally crust, flake, and peel off. It is vital to avoid interfering with the healing process to prevent scarring and shield the treated area from sun exposure. Once the peeling process has been completed, the treated skin will feel softer while looking clearer, younger, and rejuvenated.

Is Laser Skin Resurfacing Right for Me?
Laser skin resurfacing is a versatile treatment for various skin concerns, including sun damage, acne scars, age spots, wrinkles, redness, pigmentation issues, rough texture, and scaly patches. However, it may not be suitable for those with very dark skin or active acne. Before deciding on laser skin resurfacing, consider your specific goals and be aware of the potential downtime. Recovery time can vary depending on the severity of your skin conditions and the type of laser used. Some patients may need up to 2 – 3 weeks to fully heal.
Laser Skin Resurfacing FAQs
How much does laser skin resurfacing cost?
Your laser resurfacing cost will be based on the treatment type you select. In your consultation, we will understand your concerns and goals before discussing the types of resurfacing treatments. Then, we will help you choose your treatment and discuss costs. Serenity Medical Aesthetics often offers skin treatment specials and discounted packages, so be sure to ask during your appointment.
What's the best type of resurfacing for me?
Our team can help you decide which resurfacing treatment best suits your needs and goals during your consultation. What treatment is best for you will depend on the health and condition of your skin, your skin issues, and the skin depth you want your treatment to reach. The length of recovery time might also be an important factor when you create a treatment plan. When unsure, it is better to try a lighter treatment to see how you like your outcomes and decide if you want something stronger for your second treatment.
How can I help my skin recover after a resurfacing treatment?
A member of the Serenity Medical Aesthetics team will give you tips on how you can help your skin heal following your laser treatment. The most important rule is don't peel or pick your skin. Doing this can cause long-term damage including scars. You should skip all hair removal methods in the treatment area, which includes waxing, shaving, or depilatory creams. We will suggest an ointment to help soothe and heal your skin.
